This picture -- which I did not take -- I find to be compelling in a number of ways. I leave it to you to respond to it as you will.
I found the image on Google Earth when I was looking for the location of Sibley, Missouri. This railroad bridge crosses the Missouri River near Sibley.
I had not heard of the Sam Gaty atrocity before this morning. You can read about it here. The first source of the story that I found states that on the night of March 28, 1863, some 80 Negroes, headed for freedom in Kansas, were shot in the head here, one by one.
So far I don't know what any "authoritative" account claims.
