Documenting the American South

Documenting the American South (DocSouth) is a digital publishing initiative that provides Internet access to texts, images, and audio files related to southern history, literature, and culture. Currently DocSouth includes sixteen thematic collections of books, diaries, posters, artifacts, letters, oral history interviews, and songs.

The University Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill sponsors Documenting the American South, and the texts and materials come primarily from its southern holdings. The UNC University Library is committed to the long-term availability of these collections and their online records. An editorial board guides development of this digital library.

What's up with Memphis Blues Again?

I've not posted here in a while.  That's not due to my lack of interest in this novel, but because of intrusive ebooks.

I recently published my first book, a literary biography called Frank Herbert:  The Works.  I'm presently in the process of rewriting two science fiction novels I wrote several years ago in order to publish them as well, at least as ebooks, and possibly also print on demand.  Their names are Cerberus and There the Weary be at Rest.

I'm also preparing for a trip to New Orleans, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas, which should very much jump-start Memphis Blues Again.

St. Louis also experienced how religious allegiances could complicate the already complex border-state politics. The city had been founded by French Catholics, and it had been a beacon to Catholic, Protestant and Jewish immigrants from Germany for decades by the time of the Civil War. In St. Louis as elsewhere along the new national divide, Catholic clergymen preached an immediate peace — which was interpreted by some as a concession to the cause of the South.

Frank Herbert: The Works.

I had to take a few days off from working on Memphis Blues Again to prepare my new (old) nonfiction book, Frank Herbert:  The Works, for publication.  It's now available at Amazon, and remember, even if you don't have a Kindle, you can download free Kindle reading apps to your computer or handheld device and read it there.

In fact I finished writing this tome in April 2006, but while I don't think a publishing house would have ever picked it up, I'm reasonably hopeful it might find a niche as an ebook.  This is a comprehensive (okay, exhaustive) critical analysis of all the published works of Frank Herbert.  Its ideas had been stewing and brewing and cross-pollinating in my mind ever since I picked up a Frank Herbert book for the first time in December 1977:  almost three decades' worth of reflection!  In that time I'd also devoured every other critical text about Herbert and his works that I could find.  This compendium embodies all the insights I could ever assemble and glean regarding his fiction and, more importantly, it seeks to recapture the incisive intellect of the man who created it all.  And perhaps the perceptive reader will find tie-ins between lessons I learned from Herbert and some of my own fiction.

So:  if you were ever a fan of Dune, or of any other works by Herbert, I hope you will consider delving into Frank Herbert:  The Works.
