LMRR'12 Dispatch #23: From Natchez to Tupelo, 3 October.

A lot of driving today and not a lot of stopping.  Quite a few pix taken of green-forested Mississippi, but too repetitive to include many of them here.  Much of this day I was on the Natchez Trace and following the progress of the Army of the Tennessee as it headed first to Jackson and then fought battles at Champion Hill and the Big Black River before laying siege to Vicksburg, another ten miles to the west.  Along the Trace I saw several deer, including does and their very young fawns, as well as a flock of turkeys.

On the Natchez Trace:

Here's a section of the original Trace:

This is how most of the diagonal drive across Mississippi looks.  When we hear of Mississippi the state we often think of black mud delta cotton fields, but most of the state is forested and green.

Getting closer to the clashes near Vicksburg.

Having been trounced at Champion Hill, the rebs had to try to scurry back to fortress Vicksburg.  The fast-moving Big Black River lay between them and their goal.  The following pix are from the site of the fighting at Big Black River, where again the rebs took heavy casualties.

More recent bridge over Big Black River on old Highway 80 (modern transit is over Interstate-80, located a short distance to the north):

Railroad bridge over Big Black River; not present during the war:

The surviving rebs ran west into their fortifications at Vicksburg, with Grant's army in hot pursuit.  But here I turned back toward the east.

On the road again:

Cheap investment opportunity (a fixer-upper):

Back on the Trace:

In Tupelo.  Battle of Tupelo (a microscopic battlefield):

At the Elvis birthplace:  definite religious vibes here, and later at Graceland:

The Presley family original outhouse.  No errr kidding.
