Iowa pushes south.

LEFT TO RIGHT, FRANCIS J. HERRON, WILLIAM VANDEVER, AND WILLIAM H. COYLE OF THE 9TH IOWA.

Vandever met up with the regiment in St Louis after they'd steamed down the Mississippi from Dubuque; perhaps this picture was taken in St Louis in the first half of October 1861:  an educated guess.

BRIGAOIER GENERAL SAMUEL R. CURTIS AS HE APPEARED IN 1862.

Vandever and Curtis had been the two US Representatives from Iowa before the war broke out.  Vandever served under Curtis at Pea Ridge.  The Gardner brothers served in Vandever's 9th Iowa regiment.

Here's some fine online coverage of the Battle of Pea Ridge.

  1. Correction: Vandever was in Dubuque too, so it's more likely this picture was taken there in September 1861.
