  1. The writing process seems to become more technical and deliberate as years go by. Sometimes, either during the original composition or like now, when editing, I get through twenty or thirty pages in a single day. Sometimes it takes two weeks of continuing labor and concentration to produce a single paragraph. Either way, it must be done in order to get on to the later paragraphs and chapters. For the most part this unevenness in pacing seems to reflect how confident I feel about whatever subject is before me at the time. Even when I end up writing very simple sentences that don't touch on any of the research I've felt compelled to undertake, the research has still been necessary to provide me with sufficient awareness of the immediate subject at hand in order to continue, to press on.
